Protocol for Treating Uterine Discharge

 

Evaluate Cow and Rate her According to the Following:

1 = Abnormal smell, temp<103, not dehydrated, not weak, eating ok

2 = Abnormal smell, temp>103, not dehydrated, not weak, eating ok

3 = Abnormal smell, systemically ill (may/may not have temp>103, dehydration, weak)

NOTE: This protocol only addresses uterine infection (metritis), if the cow has other problems they need to be addressed separately.

Status = 1

Day One

  1. Infuse uterus with Uterine Infusion #3

Day Two

  1. Reevaluate cows condition
    • Improvement: No treatment, continue to monitor for two more days
    • No Change: Repeat infusion with Uterine Infusion #3
    • Changed to Status 2 or 3: See Appropriate Section

Day Three

  1. Reevaluate cows condition
    • No clinical signs: Monitor for one more day
    • No Change: Inject IM with Naxcel or Ampicillin, Continue Monitoring
    • Changed to Status 2 or 3: See Appropriate Section

Status = 2

Day One

  1. Infuse uterus with Uterine Infusion #2
  2. Banamine (1cc/cwt IM or IV)
  3. Mark as treated and record treatment and withdrawal times on record

Day Two

  1. Reevaluate cows condition
    • Improvement: No treatment, continue to monitor for two more days
    • No Change: Repeat infusion with Uterine Infusion #2, Repeat Banamine
    • Changed to Status 3: See Appropriate Section

Day Three

  1. Reevaluate cows condition
    • No clinical signs: Monitor for one more day
    • No Change: Inject IM with Naxcel or Ampicllin, Continue Monitoring
    • Changed to Status 3: See Appropriate Section

Status = 3

Day One

  1. Treat with LA-200 IV (5cc/cwt)
  2. Infuse uterus with Uterine Infusion #2
  3. Treat with Banamine (1cc/100 lbs.) IV or IM
  4. If dehydrated, drench cow with 5 gallons water with FreshStart packet mixed in
  5. Mark as treated and record treatment on record

Day Two

  1. Reevaluate cows condition
    • Improvement: Repeat LA-200, Banamine
    • No Change: Repeat LA-200, Uterine Infusion #2, Banamine, +/- drench,
    • Condition declining: Repeat all treatments, consult vet

Day Three

  1. Reevaluate cows condition
    • Improvement: Monitor for two more days
    • No Change: Consult vet
    • Condition declining: Consult vet

 

Pharmaceuticals

  1. Ampicillin (Polyflex 400 mg/ml)

    Dose: Polyflex: 1.25 cc/cwt IM

    Withdrawal:

    • Milk 48 hours after last treatment
    • Meat 6 days
  2. Naxcel or Excenel

    Dose: 2 cc/cwt IM

    Withdrawal:

    • No milk
    • Naxcel: No meat
    • Excenel: Meat 2 days
  3. Long acting Oxytetracycline (200 mg/ml)

    Dose: 5 cc/cwt IV or IM (Give IV very slowly)

    Withdrawal:

    • Milk 96 hours (4 days) after last treatment
    • Meat 28 days
  4. Uterine Infusion #2

    Dose: 250cc bottle intrauterine

    Withdrawal:

    • Milk 96 hours after last treatment
    • Meat 19 days
  5. Uterine Infusion #3

    Dose: 250cc bottle intrauterine

    Withdrawal:

    • No milk
    • No meat
  6. Banamine

    Dose: 1cc/cwt IM or IV

    Withdrawal:

    • Milk 72 hours
    • Meat 4 days
